Shingles are considered to be some of the most affordable and versatile roofing materials around. Part of what makes them so convenient is the fact they do not take as long as other kinds of roofing substances, like stone or metal. However, this does not mean that shingling is easy. Before the installation can take place, a powerful underlayment needs to be laid, which allows the roof to resist water. This adhesive needs to be stretched tightly to grip the roof sheathing. A sloppy application would create wrinkles and bubbles, preventing the underlayment from sealing to the fastening nails. 

The roof is then covered with felt underlayment, all precisely measured to overlap. A drip edge must also be nailed in an overlapping fashion at the end of the eaves. Particularly in Florida, where rain is often combined with heavy winds, such precautions are necessary to prevent shingle failure. Only after the flashing and drip edge have been installed can professionals begin to add the shingles, moving in steady rows or “courses.” After the tabs have been cut off the shingles, the courses need to be applied within precise fractions of an inch.
